The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, met with the European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ilva Johansson, who is on a working visit to Chisinau today. The officials discussed the security situation in the region, as an aftermath of the Russian military aggression in Ukraine and the refugees’ flow caused by this war. The head of state emphasized that for the Republic of Moldova it is important to continue helping all those who need a shelter here. The EU Commissioner, Ilva Johansson, said that the solidarity of Moldovan citizens in this situation was outstanding and they deserve much appreciation.
Moreover, the discussions were focused as well on the efforts of the country's authorities to cope with the new challenges - actions to strengthen the border, increasing the number of border guards and police officers involved in ensuring public order, institutions’ joint measures to guarantee optimal conditions for refugees. In this context, President Maia Sandu thanked the EU for the rapid deployment of FRONTEX officers and other experts in Moldova, who are working with the border police, for the assistance provided to refugees by EUBAM and for the coordinating actions to relocate them to EU states. "The safety and security of our citizens remains a priority. I appreciate the commitment and dedication of the employees of the various law enforcement bodies during this period", President Maia Sandu said.
