President of the Republic of Moldova, Nicolae Timofti, participated today, 17 July current year, at the State Residence, a meeting with Romanian President, Traian Basescu.
After the face-to-face meeting and the official talks held with the members of the two official delegations, President Nicolae Timofti made the following press statement:
“I had a warm and consistent discussion with His Excellency, Mr. President Traian Basescu. Mr. President is a friend of the Republic of Moldova. There is a brotherhood relation between our countries and this is a feeling I have today, as well, while meeting Basescu.
Our talk included a string of joint projects. I will categorise them on fields in order to give them more clarity.
As regards the political sector, we agreed to maintain a dynamic pace in our bilateral dialogue. We strongly believe that the citizens from the two banks of the Prut have to benefit from the special and privileged relation between our countries.
Romania is an unreserved supporter of our European path. I thanked President Basescu for the precious support and for his involvement in projects of strategic importance to Moldova, namely, the European integration, energy security and the Transnistrian conflict settlement.
I also appreciated the effort of the Romanian Government and diplomacy to plead Moldova’s case at international level.
As regards the economic sector, I was satisfied to have real talks with President Basescu referring to a string of joint projects.
The construction of the Iasi-Ungheni gas pipeline, which is crucial for our energy security, will begin by late August, with an essential financial support from the Romanian side amounting to 9 million euros.
Other three Moldovan-Romanian energy projects are to be implemented soon, some of them even this year. These are: Balti-Suceava, Ungheni-Iasi-Straseni and Gotesti-Falciu high power lines.
We also discussed the need to build new bridges over the Prut river in the Ungheni region and the Moldovan settlement Leca and in the one of Falciu in Romania.
We expressed our willingness to foster the trade relations and mutual investments.
As regards the cultural sector, I thanked Basescu for a one-million-volume book donation, meant for the school libraries, as well as for the Maramures church set up in Soroca and for the 5,500 scholarships offered to our pupils and students.
We also agreed to amiably solve, as soon as possible, the issue related to the rebroadcasting of the Romanian TV channel TVR1 in Moldova”.
