Moldovan president, IMF official address cooperation, assistance, new programme

President Nicolae Timofti today met International Monetary Fund Executive Director for Moldova Menno Snel.

The officials discussed aspects on cooperation between Moldova and IMF in terms of signing a new assistance programme.

Timofti assured that Moldova would certainly fulfil the commitments taken before the IMF and thanked Menno Snel for the Fund’s financial assistance. The president stressed that the government would undertake active actions, in order to provide fiscal and budgetary sustainability, keep a prudent monetary policy and consolidate Moldova’s financial sector.

For his part, Menno Snel informed about the importance to further maintain political stability in Moldova, in order to achieve the economic goals. Snel also welcomed the Chisinau authorities’ efforts to strengthen, via legislative amendments, the independence of the National Bank of Moldova (BNM), aimed at enhancing the BNM’s supervision capacities.

The IMF last assistance programme for Moldova was completed in April 2013. Within the programme, Moldova benefited from financial assistance worth 566 million dollars.

The IMF Executive Board will take a decision on the adoption of a new assistance programme for Moldova in next March.
