Nicolae Timofti was born on December 22, 1948 in the village of Ciutulesti, Soroca district. He has graduated in 1964 from the school of Floresti. During 1964 - 1967 Nicolae Timofti attended evening school in Floresti. During 1967-1972 he studied at the Faculty of Law of the State University of Moldova.
In the period 1974-1976 Nicolae Timofti worked as senior consultant at the Ministry of Justice and on April 11, 1976 he was elected as judge of the former Frunze district of Chisinau. During 1980-1996 he worked as magistrate at the Supreme Court. In June 1990 he was elected as Vice President of the Supreme Court.
In 1992 he attended courses of the Institute for training of judges in the US study program “The US judicial system” and in 1996 – courses of the study program “ECHR Convention”, organized under the auspices of the UNDP.
In 1996 he was appointed President of the Court of Appeal of the Republic of Moldova and was awarded with the Order “Gloria muncii” (Labour Glory). In 1998 Mr. Timofti was awarded the title “Om Emerit” (Emeritus person). He worked as judge at the Court of Appeal of the Republic of Moldova in the period 2001-2003, and during 2003-2005 he was in office of judge at the Court of Appeal Chisinau.
In 2005 Mr. Timofti was appointed judge of the Supreme Court of Justice. He was a member of the Superior Council of Magistrates during 2003-2011, and in 2011 became the chairman of this institution.
Nicolae Timofti was elected President of the Republic of Moldova on March 16, 2012.
He took the oath into office as President of the Republic of Moldova on March 23, 2012.
Nicolae Timofti held the position of President of the Republic of Moldova from March 23, 2012 to December 23, 2016.
Nicolae Timofti is married and has three children.
